Writing Fiction: A Short Course is a collection of eight lectures I gave last fall for a Writer’s Studio online course through Arizona State University’s Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. The lessons cover everything from plotting and characterization, through reader engagement, writing realistic dialogue and things you want to take care of to give yourself a good shot at a career. While everything in here is in keeping with the material I present in The Secrets, I opted for some new approaches to shed more light on some of these very tricky items.

In addition to the lectures, I include the quartet of my stories that I used as examples:

Tip-Off (as yet unavailable in the store)
Least of My Brethren
The Cards Call Themselves
No Rest For The Wicked

Sold separately those four stories would go for $9, but they’re included in this $20 package.

I’m really pleased with this book. It really distills down to the core the critical elements of writing fiction—and by fiction I mean stories that readers will enjoy, remember, and come back to again and again. Pretty much anyone can string words together; Writing Fiction will show you how to do it in a manner that will make people smile, and let you live the dream of having your work published.
