The Rules of Writing

Some of you may recall The Rules of Writing were a key component for the first ten episodes of The Secrets podcast. The Rules of Writing were originally published in issues 2-21 of my writing newsletter, The Secrets. I’ve finally pulled them from those issues and collected them all in one forty-one page long book.

These rules include advice from other writers, and insights gleaned through years of professional writing. These are lessons that every writer learns, usually in the first few years of their career, so studying The Rules of Writing can speed your development considerably, and help you avoid many of the mistakes that plague writers early on. They’re also very useful as diagnostic tools. When A story is going poorly, just glancing through the Rules can remind you of something you’ve underplayed or forgotten.
